Your app is ready. Now you need people who’ll try it and tell you where they get stuck. App Hive and 4builders can help in different ways.
What Google Play requires
For personal developer accounts created after 13 November 2023, Google requires at least 12 testers continuously opted in for 14 days before you can apply for production access. Approval is reviewed, not automatic. If a tester leaves and returns, their consecutive period starts again. [1]
Which community fits your test?
App Hive: exchange Android app tests
App Hive connects developers who test one another’s apps. Its site describes free Hive entry, with points earned through testing and optional purchases. [3]
The manual describes groups of 17 developers and daily tasks with screenshots. It gives a 15-day active phase, while the homepage says 14 days. Confirm the schedule and workload before joining. [4]
4builders: test with people you can keep talking to
4builders puts you in a private Telegram circle with three other indie hackers. Ask who has an Android phone, arrange a test exchange and discuss the bugs together. We’re building this service ourselves. [5]
A circle gives you three potential peers. You’ll still need more testers to meet Google’s requirement, and Android participation depends on the members. The conversation can continue after launch. Find your circle.
A message to find testers
Say what your app does, what people should try and how long you need them to stay. Mention any login or payment required.
I’m testing an Android invoice app and looking for testers for the full closed-test period. Could you try creating, editing and exporting an invoice, then send me any problems? I’m happy to test your app in return.
Check the access link first
Add testers through an email list or Google Group, then share the opt-in link. Google Group members must also opt in to the app’s test. Try the instructions with one person before sending them to everyone. Test feedback is private. [2]
A simple feedback plan
This is a suggested schedule. Adapt it to your app and the time your testers agreed to give you.
| When | Try | Record |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–2 | Install, sign in and finish the first task. | Access problems and confusing steps. |
| Days 3–5 | Use the main feature with different inputs. | Bugs and steps to reproduce them. |
| Days 6–10 | Retest fixes and reopen saved work. | What improved and what still fails. |
| Days 11–14 | Repeat the main task without instructions. | Anything that still needs explaining. |
Keep the app version, phone model and feedback with your fixes. Google asks about the testing work when you apply for production access. [1]
